Redevelopment plans finally announced for 40-unit seniors building
MELBOURNE: A 40-unit seniors housing complex will be redeveloped into a 104-unit building for seniors and small families.
Bill Rigby Manor, which is owned by BC Indigenous Housing Society, will be redeveloped as its current operating agreements expire in two years.
In a press release, the housing society said the “subsidies connected to the building cannot continue in their current form” after 2028.
They added redevelopment is needed to secure housing for the next 60 years “to maintain affordability.”
“The building has been part of the Steveston community for decades,” said Brenda Knights, chief executive officer of the BC Indigenous Housing Society.
“Our goal is ensuring it remains affordable for current and future residents while supporting tenants throughout the transition and increasing housing supply.”
The society met with current residents on Tuesday, Feb. 17 to explain the redevelopment plans.
The earliest tenants will need to relocate will be either spring or summer 2027. The society said all tenants will be given “relocation assistance,” and they will have the right of first refusal once the redevelopment is completed.
“We are here to support our tenants every step of the way and make this transition as comfortable as possible,” said Knights.
Bill Rigby Manor sits on a one-acre lot just west of Steveston Community Park at Chatham Street and First Avenue.
The project will need to go through a rezoning process, during which there will be public notices and opportunities for public input.
