Radical plans to transform ageing shopping centre into homes

LOS ANGELES: Plans have been drawn up to ‘revitalise’ a shopping centre which was built in 1971 into seniors housing.

Bold new plans to “revitalise” an aging Essex shopping centre and build 800 new homes in the centre of town will be shown to the public this weekend. Huge plans to transform Grays Shopping Centre have been in the pipeline for years, with Thurrock Council assisting developers NewRive r in creating the plans for the now old centre, which was built over 50 years ago.

NewRiver, the owners of the shopping centre, wish to completely overhaul the designs of the space to the east of Grays High Street with a brand new town square, 800 new homes, 200 new parking spaces and create 180 new jobs. The owners say they wish to develop a new town centre that’s an “attractive setting for new shops, restaurants, leisure, and community spaces”.

NewRiver said they wish the public areas to be “vibrant” and a mix of retail and leisure outlets with better connectivity to the riverside. They also wish to see a boost to the nighttime economy in a “sustainable” urban location.
