New training cafe for disabled opens in aged care facility
LOS ANGELES: A new cafe that will employ locals with a disability is now set to open at Torquay’s Star of the Sea Aged Care Residence.
More than 10 trainees will work at Star Cafe over the next 12 months, with the help of hospitality and disability support workers.
Cafe coordinator Cathy Rundle said there was a real need for this kind of a learning hub on the Surf Coast.
Ms Rundle said it was about helping those trainees get into the workforce.
“If our clients can be trained to develop those skills where they can even as kitchen hands or baristas, I think it’s going to provide our businesses with some trained staff,” she said.
“We will spend the time with participants, therefore they will develop the skills.
“I think they will be an investment to any future employers.”
Ms Rundle said there were also intergenerational benefits, with the cafe located in the aged care facility.
It had also been well received by visitors to the centre.
