Multigenerational community being planned for regional coastal belt

LOS ANGELES: A multigenerational community for a regional coastal area is now being contemplated by planning authorities.

IRT Group has submitted a State Significant Development Application for its multi-generational community in Moruya on the south coast of New South Wales after making amendments to its masterplan in January.

The new community is located on the far South Coast of New South Wales and is named Wattleview.

Blending retirement living and residential aged care, Wattleview aims to create an inclusive space for people at different life stages and will feature on-site accommodation for key workers and shared community spaces, including a café, clubhouse and village green and health and wellbeing facilities.

The SSDA is an important step forward for the project, which IRT chief executive officer Ross Gallagher said is about “investing in people, place, and long-term community wellbeing,” not just housing.

“This development has been intentionally designed to bring generations together, creating opportunities for older Australians, working-age residents, families and essential workers to connect, support one another and live well,” he said.

The on-site worker accommodation is a central part of the proposal, responding directly to housing challenges for the region and creating opportunities for workers to connect strongly with the community they care for.

This scale and integration of housing, care, amenities and key worker accommodation makes Wattleview a defining project for Moruya and will build on IRT’s 50-year presence in the region – the provider has another retirement living village and co-located aged care centre in Moruya and several other homes and villages in the surrounding areas of Dalmeny and Batemans Bay.

“We’ve carefully curated state-of-the-art facilities that promote wellbeing, independence and connection across generations,” Mr Gallagher said.

“This includes a dedicated health and wellbeing centre with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, gym and resident library – creating shared opportunities for people to stay active, engaged and connected close to home.”

The investment in Moruya is driven by social outcomes, Mr Gallagher said, and is reflective of IRT’s role as a community-owned, purpose-led organisation that has a clear focus on delivering lasting social value.

“Wattleview will deliver high-quality homes, services and shared spaces that strengthen the community, enable older Australians to age well, support essential local workers, and respond to the real needs of the region – now and into the future,” he said.

IRT hosted a community drop-in session and online webinar in August 2025 to gather community feedback on the project, which directly informed the masterplan that was revised and shared in January 2026.
