Best retirement housing design for Global Awards shortlisted
LOS ANGELES: The shortlist for the best retirement housing design has been declared.
Over 250 designs have been considered by the awards secretariat. One of the finalists in this category is shown above.
A controversial major housing development on former hospital land has taken a significant step forward.
It was confirmed in June that proposals put forward by property developers Step Places and McCarthy Stone to build four blocks up to five storeys high on part of the former Alder Hey Hospital site on Alder Road had been scaled back. Now an official planning application by the firms has been lodged with Liverpool Council.
Almost two years ago, the city signed off on proposals for Manchester-based companies to construct their original designs. The project, which has attracted strong opposition to this day, would have allowed for the construction of 160 apartments, an office block, retirement accommodation, 13 care apartments and 40 homes.
Step Places went back to the drawing board, with land bought back by the NHS for the development of neighbouring Springfield Park, and has now confirmed its amended plans. The number of homes and assisted living facilities has reduced but the amount of retirement apartments is to go up.
A further 27 units for over 55s would be built, bringing the total to 59, but only 31 houses and eight autism assisted living units would now feature. A newsletter from Step Places issued to residents in Knotty Ash has confirmed the developer had scaled back its plans earlier this summer.
The Global Award winner will be announced in November in London. (Globals)
