Best co-op housing community design for Global Awards shortlisted
MELBOURNE: The shortlist for the best social housing community design has been declared.
Over 250 designs have been considered by the awards secretariat. One of the finalists in this category is shown above.
The cohousing community concept is rooted in the idea that housing provides not only private space for individuals but also a setting for social connection and a foundation for community infrastructure.
The competition aimed to support the development of housing cooperatives to foster collaboration, resident participation, shared use of resources, and connections to the urban environment.
Support diversity in housing options across the city
Encourage innovation in the housing market
Reduce social isolation
Two lots with existing land-use plans were available: one at Laugavegur 159 and the other at Yrsufell 2a-2i.
Four groups participated in partnership with architecture firms. All proposals focused on Laugavegur 159, though one group expressed interest in further discussions about the lot at Yrsufell. The participating groups were Miðgarður Building Company; Rakettan; Búseti Co-Op and Basalt; and Stakkahlíð hses. and Kanon Architects.
The Miðgarður Building Association team won the competition. Their proposal emphasizes combining housing and workspaces for residents based on equality and accessibility within the group, while offering services and workspaces to the surrounding community.
The Global Award winner will be announced in December in London. (Globals)
