Best affordable seniors housing design for Global Awards shortlisted
LOS ANGELES: The shortlist for the best affordable seniors housing design has been declared.
Over 250 designs have been considered by the awards secretariat. One of the finalists in this category is shown above.
The Water Corporation is poised to help deliver a medium-to-high density housing project in the heart of Margaret River.
Backing the proposal which awaits ministerial approval, Shire of Augusta-Margaret River planners said the project could address affordable housing needs within walking distance of the town centre.
The development was earmarked to be a likely two-storey apartment complex planners likened to the award-winning Evermore apartments in Fremantle’s White Gum Valley delivered by the Yolk Property Group — the same developers behind the Margaret River South subdivision slated for site works this summer.
The apartments would replace the defunct Water Corporation depot on Willmott Avenue once the land was sold to a commercial developer after the rezoning was approved.
In passing the scheme amendment at the August 9 meeting, deputy Shire president Julia Meldrum said the 2304sqm site represented “high density in an ideal location close to town”.
During public advertising, seven submissions were received, of which three directly supported higher density on the site.
The council decision backed a 40/60 R-code split, with the final density dependent on the WA Planning Commission.
At R40, the site could feature seven to 10 dwellings, but at the higher end — similar to the Evermore apartments — up to 50 people could be housed.
“It is considered that the low level of response relative to the extent and duration of consultation, and the levels of support in the responses received, indicate that there is limited concern for the rezoning of the site and the higher density development outcome,” the report said.
Cr Meldrum acknowledged some density concerns, but the outcome was promising.
The Global Award winner will be announced in November in London. (Globals)
