Best affordable seniors housing design for Global Awards shortlisted

LOS ANGELES: The shortlist for the best affordable seniors housing design has been declared.

Over 250 designs have been considered by the awards secretariat. One of the finalists in this category is shown above.

The project from Hollywood Community Housing Corp., now under construction at 7600 Pacific Avenue, will eventually consist of a four-story complex featuring 64 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments above 48 basement parking spaces.

According to a December 2021 staff report to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, the apartments will be reserved for formerly unhoused and low-income households earning no more than 40 percent of the area median income for a period of 55 years.

Koning Eizenberg is designing the Walnut Park Apartments, which will consist of two buildings, connected by pedestrian bridges their upper floors and separated by a central courtyard at ground level. Plans also call for a 1,600-square-foot community room, a resident’s lounge, a computer room, a laundry facility, and offices for administrative and supportive services staff.

The development site is located one block north of a vacant half-acre lot at Pacific Boulevard and Grand Avenue, which L.A. County is redeveloping into a public park. Walnut Park, which has nearly 16,000 residents, is among the most park-poor communities in Los Angeles County.

Other upcoming projects from Hollywood Community Housing include new affordable developments in Venice and North Hills.

The Global Award winner will be announced in November in London. (Globals)
