Compact units now set to improve seniors housing choice
MELBOURNE: Compact city rental units are now set to improve housing options for all seniors.
Coronation Property has secured planning approval for its new apartment typology City Starter, City Stayer as part of the property developer’s build-to-rent community at Precinct 75 in the Inner West Sydney suburb of St Peters.
The new housing model was designed in part to address the growing need for housing options for older Australians wishing to downsize and approval was granted through the New South Wales government’s Housing Delivery Authority pathway.
The City Starter, City Stayer apartments range between 30–35 square metres, and private living spaces are supported by a broader network of shared amenities, services and community infrastructure.
“If we are serious about addressing the housing crisis, we need to move beyond outdated models and be willing to rethink how housing is designed, delivered and lived in,” he said.
“These apartments challenge long-standing planning conventions and demonstrate that smaller homes, when thoughtfully designed and supported by shared amenity, can deliver a high-quality living experience.
“Innovation like this is critical to increasing supply, improving accessibility and ensuring more people can live close to where they work and belong.”
The first City Starter, City Stayer residents at Precinct 75 are expected to move in from early 2027 and Coronation Property plans to also roll them out across its Erskineville, Waterloo and St Leonards projects, subject to planning approvals.
