Seniors get new affordable housing project created from car park

MELBOURNE: Seniors have gained access to a new affordable housing project created from a disused car park.

A former Sears parking lot in the Mission District is now home to a 145-unit affordable housing project serving seniors who are homeless or close to it.

City leaders gathered Tuesday to celebrate the opening of 1633 Valencia, a six-story building near the intersection of Cesar Chavez and Valencia streets. Residents of its studio apartments are 55 years and older and earn 30% to 60% of the San Francisco area median income, which last year was $65,450 for one person.
