Bayside residents are split on a controversial plan after Brisbane City Council green-lit a plan to allow 15-storey towers, amid fears the suburb will crumble under the weight of new development.

The Wynnum Centre Suburban Renewal Precinct Plan was adopted into the City Plan on Tuesday following state government approval in April, and will come into effect next month.

More than 500 community submissions were received on the plan, including calls to restrict building heights.

Under the final plan, heights will range from five storeys on the suburb’s fringe to a limited cluster of up to 15 storeys near Wynnum Central station.

The Global Award winner will be announced in December in London. (Globals)
