Government set to introduce new mixed-use affordable housing model
LOS ANGELES: The government is now set to introduce a new mixed use affordable housing community model.
The Government of Saskatchewan has announced a new housing model for North Battleford aimed at expanding access for low-to-moderate-income families and individuals.
The province is converting Valleyview Tower II from its original use as seniors’ social housing into a mixed-use, affordable housing facility. Officials say the change is designed to maximize the capacity of the community’s housing portfolio, while responding to a shift in local demand.
“We are taking a new and innovative approach to expand safe and affordable housing and give more individuals and families a place to call home,” social services minister Terry Jenson said in a statement.
Under the new model, units will be available to those who may not typically qualify for traditional social housing. Monthly rent for a one-bedroom unit is set at $870, while two-bedroom units will cost $1,000. Both rates include utilities and internet.
The 89-unit building consists of 81 one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom units.
Current senior residents of Valleyview Tower II were given the choice to remain in the building or move to the nearby Valleyview Tower I, which will continue to operate exclusively as seniors’ social housing. By designating Tower I for seniors and opening Tower II to mixed-use, the province aims to fill vacant units with non-seniors and small families.
The Battlefords Housing Authority will begin accepting tenant applications on May 1. Units will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis following an income-testing and assessment process.
