Plans for retirement flats at former library submitted to council

MELBOURNE: PLANS for 46 retirement flats on the site of a former civic hall and library have been submitted to the council.

McCarthy & Stone’s proposal for the land on Allport Lane in Bromborough features 29 one-bedroomed and 17 two-bedroomed retirement living apartments, a house manager’s office, communal facilities such as a residents’ lounge, CCTV entry system, ‘associated landscaping’ and car parking.

The site is previously developed land and formerly used as Bromborough Civic Hall and Library.

A statement prepared on behalf of McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles and submitted with the planning application, said: “The proposal provides the opportunity to achieve a high quality development that would positively contribute to meeting demonstrable local housing needs.”

Around 60 local companies would be employed during construction with additional job opportunities created when the scheme opens.

The planning statement added “The proposed retirement living housing will provide modern, purpose built accommodation, in keeping with the current needs and aspirations of elderly persons.

“Landscaped gardens, as well as the retention and improvement of the existing boundary with the introduction of additional shrubs and trees, will provide an attractive outlook for the occupiers.”

It concluded: “The proposed redevelopment of this site will provide a sympathetically designed development that will enhance the character and appearance of the local area.

“Additionally, the proposal will offer significant benefits including high quality landscaping and the delivery of specialist housing for older people.

“Careful consideration has been given to the nature of the site, its relationship to its immediate surroundings and the amenities of neighbouring occupiers.

“There is no doubt that a high quality development will make an effective use of this previously developed site and respond to its townscape.
