Best affordable seniors housing design for Global Awards shortlisted
LOS ANGELES: The shortlist for the best affordable seniors housing design has been declared.
Over 250 designs have been considered by the awards secretariat. One of the finalists in this category is shown below.
The Mosaic Apartments — Pittsburgh’s first affordable housing community for LGBTQ+ seniors — is on track to open this fall.
That talk among leaders from Presbyterian SeniorCare Network and the Persad Center in 2017 spurred the first-of-its-kind complex in Oakland, a 48-unit new build at the corner of Forbes and Craft avenues that will contain 35 federally subsidized apartments.
“This is an opportunity for us as an industry in affordable housing and in senior services to embrace this population in a way we haven’t done before,” said Jim Pieffer, CEO of Presbyterian SeniorCare Network, Western Pennsylvania’s largest aging services provider.
Now in its final stages of construction, the complex that offers housing for adults 62 and older is accepting applications and expects to begin moving residents in as early as Nov. 1.
It’s the second such complex in all of Pennsylvania, and advocates say the development symbolizes a hopeful step in filling a longstanding gap in senior housing by offering LGBTQ+ elders a safe, affirming place to live.
The $28 million project is being developed by Presbyterian in partnership with Affirmative Investments, a Boston-based real estate consulting firm.
The Global Award winner will be announced in December in London. (Globals)
