Best affordable housing design for Global Awards shortlisted
LOS ANGELES: The shortlist for the best affordable seniors housing design has been declared.
Over 250 designs have been considered by the awards secretariat. One of the finalists in this category is shown above.
The Gorge View Society got more than it bargained for Thursday as Victoria council granted the group $770,000 from its housing reserve fund to assist in the construction of the next phase of subsidized seniors housing at Chown Place.
The society, which operates Chown Place in the Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood, had applied for a grant of $692,500, but council bumped up the figure to reflect an older policy of granting $10,000 per housing unit being created.
Coun. Chris Coleman initiated the increase, noting the housing reserve fund was established for just these kinds of cases. “This is a worthy application where we should be trying to max our contributions.”
Coun. Dave Thompson said the grant will help the Gorge View Society leverage significant capital and operating funding from government partners such as B.C. Housing and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
The grant is targeted toward funding the second phase of Chown Place’s redevelopment.
The Global Award winner will be announced next November in London. (Globals)
