Boomer creates warehouse-style pad with two-storey ‘book tower’
NEW YORK: A two-storey tower of books forms the core of this warehouse-style Prahran pad, to make it the stuff of bookworms’ dreams.
The “wow property” is also expected to appeal to buyers with “great art and potentially great car collections”, given its $6.8-$7.4 million price tag includes a gallery space and six-car garage, according to Kay & Burton Armadale agent Michael Armstrong.
“An Aussie based in LA with an extensive art collection picked up on that straight away,” he said.
Mr Armstrong said he spent the bulk of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend responding to buyer inquiries on the one-of-a-kind home at 6-8 Doon St “from all over the world”.
“We had 50 or 60 inquiries in first week, (and conducted) 15 inspections. It’s been insane,” he said.
The agent said the vendor collaborated with Jolson Architecture about six years ago to create the special home.
“Despite appearances of it being a warehouse conversion, it was actually a brand-new building,” he said.
“The owner was passionate about developing a property that reflected their love of art and travel.”
The design accordingly incorporated extensive steel, concrete, timber and brick.
The house sprawls across three levels, which are connected by a lift.
Mr Armstrong said the remarkable book tower wrapped “around the lift core” and stretched from “the floor of the first level to the ceiling of the second”.
A sleek kitchen and bar form part of the first-floor open-plan living zone, which flows out to a large terrace and suspended pool and pool deck via retractable doors.
The main bedroom features a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, shares the top storey with a spacious home office. City views are on offer from this level.
The remaining two bedrooms, a “TV den” and the huge garage make up the ground floor.
“It seriously has everything you could imagine,” the agent said.
“And it’s in a very cool little section of Prahran.”
The property is being sold privately.
